Ashley Burns, aka Burnsy, makes his presence felt on the podcast this week, where we reminisce mostly about classic wrestling from the late ’90s. We talk about the bloated nature of the nWo, wrestling writing in general, the Summer of Punk II, where WWE went wrong with not ripping on the NBA and the state of wrestling rumor reporting as relating to sports rumors. Burnsy also has a story about how he may have been responsible for a Buff Bagwell US Title reign and other things in WCW. We also venture into some sports talk, mainly the NBA and MLB. Finally, we bring it on home with some movie chat, including the shittiest movies of 2011, why Coming to Americakinda rules and how curse words are always awkwardly edited out of TV showings of movies. I am, like many of you, I’m behind on my wrestling podcasts, so shame on all of us. And, like many of you, the only wrestling feed I subscribe to is the Fair to Flair Master Feed. Because I don’t think there are any others.

I heard that RKOK Computer episode of The Wrestling Podcast was okay.

 I shall, because if I’m not friends with stylesclash, ringsidereview, garciansmith… I’m just a plain nobody.

 

I’m not sure what Cliff or Garcian have to do with anything I have been saying to you in these posts, but alright then. I’m glad you at least decided to edit out the part where you told us all to go fuck ourselves. Good job.

I’m going to use this to segue into a discussion about my least favourite kind of wreslting fans:

The one’s who think they are CM Punk. 

Because SPOILER ALERT: You’re not. I know that might sound like a pretty specific minority to pinpoint as my least favourite, but there sure are a lot of them out there. You can think Punk is witty and cool and a badass all you like, but if you try to emulate his asshole persona in real life, be prepared for some form of backlash. 

You probably know the type that I’m talking about. They think watching indie matches makes them more knowledgeable than you, if your opinion differs to theirs they will immediately try to belittle you because of it, and sometimes they even use Punk quotes as counter arguments in debates, as if his opinions are irrefutable fact. They are the kind of people who describe themselves as “an asshole” as if it’s an endearing quality, and excuse their rudeness as “just being real”. No. You’re not being real. You’re being rude and inconsiderate and immature. 

Telling someone to go fuck themselves just because she made a civil remark about the way you handle criticism doesn’t make you smarter than everyone else. It just means you have a deep-rooted inferiority complex that causes you to retaliate the way you do whenever someone questions your opinions. 

I’m sick of all this negativity on my dashboard. I’m not going to respond to it anymore, I’m just going to remove it. I honestly think Punk would be ashamed if he saw the widespread effect of his public persona.

This is the part in conversation where it should be noted that even if CM Punk is really an asshole, his projection as a character IS to be a smarmy asshole. He’s funny, which is why we like him, but (in a tweet Punk once answered himself) he brought up being an unlikable protagonist like Breaking Bad’s Walter White. When a member of an audience attempts to embody a character they see on television, it’s disastrous, but we somehow don’t think this way in relation to wrestling. I don’t want to be a Dexter-level sociopath (even without the murder). I don’t want to be soullessly uncaring personalities of It’s Always Sunny.

But I’m ready to admit that I love watching THOSE characters. When we stop trying to be somebody, we figure out how not to be a pompous ass and let our vulnerabilities show through and GASP, we become better people that can deal in the world of reality. If someone can’t handle that, it’s a waste of their own time.

Rant, but I felt this addresses the points stylesclash made that I liked to expand on.
